It’s FREE…It’s Easy…It’s EasyGPS! But doesn’t export to KML!

After doing a lot of mapping, say 500 points on my GPS, I needed a way to get them of my GPS. Doing it by hand, are you crazy or just really, really technophobic? So after purchasing a cable off eBay for a few bucks, and not sure if Garmin’s software required a license, I downloaded the free software EasyGPS. Great! I thought, until I noticed that it only exported to GPX format, and I could only use copy and paste internally in the application. Well thank god, they aren’t Microsoft[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] and used XML [properly]. So I built a GPX2KML Converter. Questions, comments, suggestions are welcome. Leave them in the comments.

SID Should Really Mean Static Identifier

I am talking about in the context of Win NT. SID is an acronym for Security Identifier. Today I needed to change the name of my main box, simple because the name, well, was crap. So thinking back to the last time I needed to change a SID, I used the newsid.exe tool from [what was then] SysInternals and I remember seeing an option for changing the name of the computer. Now I could of simply inputting my current SID, but no, I was in a rush and chose to generate a random key. Big mistake, all my EFS encrypted files (which were not that important anyway, since I don’t use EFS to secure anything important) were made usless, now I could recover them, but to save me the trouble I obtained the old SID from SAM file (C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SAM), by viewing the security tab, which then showed me my SID. (You will need to truncate after the 7th dash, eg. S-1-5-21-xxxxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxxx|-xxxx <– .The rest is just to do with the user name. The simple way to change the computer name is Control Panel>System>Computer Name>Change.

So there a lesson learn’t, do not change the SID!

The do’s and dont’s of user info collecting on the web.

Users fill out many forms day, whether it is just loging-in, signing-up or something else the user has to repeditivly enter in his or her infomation. The worst example that I have found is Microsoft, lets look at the steps to get a free usb drive from them. (The same thing applies to pretty much, if not all forms that Microsoft has.) You need to sign in with your passport. Ok, I have entered all the infomation except for the answers to the questions, many times before, so why can’t they just ask me for the answers insted of asking me for everything again. I have seen some sites where they try to help you either by having a checkbox that you can check to say if your billing is the same as your postal address, or you get the same big form but some of the info that they already have on you is there. Lets start with the first thing in that sentence: the checkbox to say that your billing is the same as your postal. The problem I have with some of the site. Is that I paid via PayPal, and see no need for a billing address. Thurermore, I am contantly asked for my phone number, (as a required field) but I see no reason for them to ring me. An example is an online advertising company, who asked me for my phone number. (I was a publisher with them) But I could never see them calling me, as they had my email, and I live in Australia so it would cost a bit more for a callRead the rest of this entry »

The Microsoft Terms and Conditions that took 24 Hours to obtain!

  • Short cut to download agreement if you don’t want to read this.
  • Summary: First I asked the M$ rep. for it, she said, I am sorry but I cannot give that to you… anyway after a lot of demanding and being put on hold for at leat 20min in total. I got it after a “24 hour timeframe” due to internal things, when I asked why, she replied I cannot tell you that..

Lets Start

You may or maynot know about the [some what hidden] Personal Support Consolidated Agreement, the one where the lady when you call Microsoft for Technical Support, and says “to listen to a summary of the key terms and conditions, Press ‘1′ . For a full copy of the terms and conditions, please ask your Microsoft Representative to send to you a copy.” Now my understanding of that is that it is illegal, however as my lawyer Co. is closed over the weekend, I can’t call them to confirm that. As I belive that you cannot force someone to accept an agreement that they have not read. Ok… So I pushed my way through their out-sourced fortress of secret records: Read the rest of this entry »
