Official Windows Vista Hardware Requirements
It states a minimum of 512Mb of RAM, however it says that you would want at least 1gb of RAM. A “A graphics processor that will support Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM)”PC systems with GPUs that do not support WDDM will only be able to provide a Windows XP-comparable desktop graphics experience, with regards to features, stability and performance. For storage Microsoft hasn’t stated anything yet. Ok, now for the CPU, AMD’s list of cpus is here:

My opinion? M$, Apple need to more look at security, optimisation and performance, than increasing the minimum system requirements.

Apple hasn’t upped the system requirements in about 6 years. Ok, maybe small stuff like HD space. But I know a good ol’ iMac from 1998 that runs Mac OS X.
The latest Mac OS X requires buil-in Firewire, but I’m sure you can work around it.

I only put apple because I have a friend who has an Imac and he said he needed more memory to run OS X. Mac would be sooo great if it could run on a “beige box”.

[...] Of course, this may also require people to upgrade their computers too as it is rumoured to require a lot more beef than XP does, though Microsoft are being very cagey about what they are for now. However, both AMD and Intel provide suggested processors. Then you’ve got to have at least 512MB RAM (though some would argue that XP really needs that) and a Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) capable card, for which nVidia, ATI and Intel provide specs. Also check out this blog post by Steven Roddis who’s come up with a list of the individual specs. [...]
